If you know anything about my story and how I started JK Naturals®, you’ll know that every product I've ever made, served a purpose for me or a member of my family. When I’m faced with a problem, I’m like a dog with a bone; I become determined to create a solution to the problem. I spend hours, weeks and sometimes months (in the case of my deodorant sticks, a full year) researching the best natural ingredients to use for a particular issue. While I’m researching I also do a lot of experimenting, formulating and sampling in order to come up with something that is effective and I can feel good about using on my kids and sharing with others. When acne became an issue in my house, I picked up the bone and got to work.
My oldest son (15) has skin like his father had when he was a teen; oily with cystic acne, the hardcore kind. A few years ago, when I realized I needed to create a product to help my son I remembered reading about a plant oil called Tamanu that had incredible healing properties. Because most people haven’t even heard of Tamanu oil, I’d like to tell you a little bit about this best kept secret.
Tamanu Oil (Calophyllum inophyllum) comes from the fruit of the Ati tree, native toPolynesia (the Pacific Ocean Islands). The trees are also found in coastal South India, the tropical coast of Africa, Malaysia and Australia. It bears fruit twice a year that look similar to bunches of green apricots. Inside these inedible fruits is a large nut kernel. The fruits are picked by hand, the nut kernels cure for 6 - 8 weeks until they become sticky and then they are cold-pressed, producing a wonderful thick, dark rich green oil. It requires 220 pounds of nut kernels to produce just 11 pounds of oil, which explains why it's so valuable. The oil has an earthy, nutty aroma that is very pleasant.
Ancient Polynesians used the oil in a variety of ways to promote beautiful skin and hair and also as a healing agent for wounds and burns. However, it was a missionary, Sister Marie Suzanne stationed in Fiji working with leprosy patients who was the first to discover the skin regenerating properties of Tamanu Oil. Since then, the scientific community began to take notice. Tamanu oil has been proven to show powerful beneficial antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that Tamanu oil applied to wounds possesses the capacity to promote the formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating healing and the growth of healthy skin. This process of forming new tissue is known as “cicatrisation” in the medical community. (http://urpjournals.com/tocjnls/21_12v1i2_3.pdf)
Using Tamanu oil on a number of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rashes, burns and even your teen's acne to name a few, has proven highly effective in healing these conditions. In addition to its healing properties, it’s also a wonderfully luxurious oil that can be used as part of any beauty regimen. However, if it’s the healing properties you are after to combat your teen’s acne, we have you covered. Tamanu oil is a key active ingredient that is combined with other essential ingredients in our DeleteZit™ formula for acne. You can find it on our website by following this link: http://bit.ly/2AtKmDu. We carefully source the Tamanu oil we use in our products, making sure to buy the highest quality virgin organic and cold-pressed oil from reliable providers. High quality Tamanu oil is deep green in color (see photo above) with a pleasant rich, earthy and nutty aroma. Additionally, we have found that taking Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) daily can help keep the eruptions at bay. We expect you'll receive amazing results but it's always best to check with your dermatologist first before applying these remedies.
Now that you've found a clean solution to your teen's acne problem rather than using all those chemical-laden acne products, your next challenge is to get your teen to actually use it, but that's a topic for another blog post ;)Kathryn Holdforth is the founder of JK Naturals®. She writes about her experiences of running a business, being a mom of a preteen and teen and the products she creates for them. She’s been making clean natural and organic skincare and personal care products for over 20 years.
