Pumpkins: More Than A Jack-o-Lantern

We always carve our pumpkin the day before Halloween. We live in California so it can still get hot during the day and the last thing you want at your doorstep is a decaying, moldy pumpkin.

Each year when we carve the pumpkins it serves as a reminder of just how truly nutritious and beneficial pumpkins are. We often get caught up in the spirit of Halloween that we don't give pumpkins the proper respective they deserve.

Pumpkin seeds and its oil contain some of the most beneficial nutrients and minerals our skin and bodies need for optimal health.  Here's the short list of some of the benefits adding pumpkin seeds and its oil to your diet or skincare routine can offer you:

  • Alpha-carotene
  • Beta-carotene
  • Fiber
  • Vitamins C and E
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Pantothenic acid

The alpha-carotene and beta-carotene are potent antioxidants found in pumpkin and are pro-vitamin A carotenoids, meaning the body converts them to vitamin A. Vitamin A promotes healthy vision and ensures proper immune function. The beta-carotene in pumpkin may also reverse skin damage caused by the sun and act as an anti-inflammatory. Alpha-carotene is thought to slow the aging process and also reduce the risk of developing cataracts and prevent tumor growth.  Carotenoids also boost immunity and lessen the risk of heart disease.

Fiber helps maintain a healthy weight and lower the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Vitamin C is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues while Vitamin E plays an important role in the proper function of many organs. It also helps repair damaged skin.

Potassium helps muscles contract, regulates body fluids, and helps maintain healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels. Magnesium helps increase energy, calms nerves and anxiety.

Pantothenic Acid, also known as Vitamin B5 promotes a healthy heart, lowers stress levels and helps keep the skin healthy and attractive in appearance.  It works wonders for acne!

Eating the pumpkin, its seeds and using the seed oil on your skin (or products that contain pumpkin seed oil as in JK Naturals Face Cleanser + JK Naturals Teen Face Cleanser) is super good for you.  So don’t just carve those pumpkins, eat them!
